Just as I am.

Dear Aspen reader,

You know that close friend or family member with whom you feel you are the best version of yourself? The one that accepts you, just as you are – flaws and all? Think about how you feel when in their presence and the comfort that it brings knowing that in their eyes you are affirmed.

Do you feel this way when you are alone with yourself?

Loving and accepting ourselves can be such a hard skill to learn. Generally, I find that I have such high standards for myself, far beyond any that anyone else might ever ask of me. I often see my faults before my strengths; focusing on what needs to improve. Why is that?

It’s a journey to learn how to love and accept every piece of ourselves – whether that’s the outside appearance or the inside traits. When we are with other people we can choose what we allow them to see but when left alone, we see all.  So how do we begin to love and accept ourselves in a positive way?

  1. Learn to laugh. Even when you feel you’ve messed up or fallen short – laugh it out. Don’t allow yourself to become disheartened by the seeming failure.

  2. Compare yourself to no one. Comparison so quickly steals your joy and attention making you feel less than. Don’t take the bait.

  3. Find your “theme song”. Music can do wonders for the soul. Whether you are a singer or not – find a song that brings you joy and gives you the opportunity to let loose and fully be yourself.

Initially, you might feel a little out of your comfort zone but the practice of loving your uniqueness will serve as a reminder that you are special and have much to offer.

In health,
Alecia
