Change Makers

Dear Aspen reader,

How do you handle the changes that life seems to constantly place in our paths? Some women are “go with the flow” types who are always up for the journey. Others seem to crave change. And then I know women who are alright with change as long as they’ve had advanced notice and can meticulously plan a few “next steps”. When I consider myself, I think that I might be a type who falls within the in-between.

Depending on the situation, I love when plans change and an adventure ensues. But since becoming a military spouse, I’ve also learned that my threshold for change isn’t as high as I once thought. But then sometimes I surprise myself and it’s higher! I’m sure that sounds confusing but across the Army there is a common phrase “hurry up and wait.” In the military community much of our lives seem to be hurrying and then waiting. Hurrying then waiting. There is an ebb and flow to the lifestyle that can quickly drown you. There are moments when I think I’ve got a good handle on the upcoming changes and then (it seems) seconds later I realize I don’t feel grounded, which brings a bout of emotions.

How might this ebb and flow apply to creating change within our wellness habits?

The first step for embracing change in wellness routines is to realize that a change is often necessary. Sometimes our health is in question and constitutes a change. Often times, I find myself in denial about the needed modifications to my wellness routine. I entertain the thought of “It’s okay to sleep in. We stayed up later last night than usual. I’ll workout tomorrow.” But before long, I realize that this mindset has become a pattern and it’s been weeks since I’ve gone on an early morning run. In this case, changing my habits is needed so that I can maintain strength, vitality and a balanced mood. By recognizing that we have a responsibility to create positive change in our life, we become the key players in our journey towards greater wellness.

Have you decided that a few, small changes are necessary?

  • Reflect on your ability to change.

  • Look to resources to support you in the specific areas of need.

  • Consider which people in your circle might provide encouragement.

In health,
Alecia
