Motivation vs. Discipline.
Dear Aspen reader,
Discipline has many definitions. Sometimes it’s negatively received in the form of “punishment” but when it comes to forming healthy habits discipline is a very positive quality to possess. The truth remains, you will never “always be motivated'‘ - so discipline is the key. Even for those of us who might enjoy a nutritious meal or a sweaty workout...sometimes the motivation runs dry. This is where discipline steps in! Don't base your wellness routine solely on feelings and motivation; instead build it on discipline and healthy habits.
A few ways for developing discipline:
Write down your intentions for a wellness routine. This doesn’t need to serve as a “set in stone” map or agenda but just a guide as to what your wellness desires might be. When the going gets tough you can look back at what was written and remind yourself of your good intentions.
Separate facts from emotions. Motivation is an emotion that can be very fleeting, so when you’re in the midst of your wellness teeter totter and wavering from side to side, remember the facts: fitness increases vitality, nutritious food is fuel for your body and creating time for self-care allows you to be a better version of yourself for others. Those are the facts that will keep you disciplined.
Find a buddy to come alongside you in your wellness journey. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you are walking the road to wellness all by yourself. If you look around, I’m sure you’ll find a neighbor, coworker or friend who is also striving to live a healthier lifestyle.
For the tech savvy, multiple phone apps exist that are sure to help you develop greater discipline. Do your research or head to the Aspen Wellness Recommendations for our top suggestions.
Keep a journal. Maybe your struggle is with eating healthy and a food journal or menu planning template is something that would keep you on track. If fitness is an area where you need more support, find a phone app to help you keep track of your progress. Or if you want to cultivate a better self-care routine then just journal your thoughts each day. Keeping a log of your attempts to eat well, move well and be well will surely add to the development of self-discipline.
Go forward into a new week feeling encouraged that self-discipline isn’t as far away as you think. Give yourself the grace you need to develop better habits of determination and you’ll start to see yourself growing from being a disciplined person to one who is motivated as well.
In health,
Alecia
